The SHEF Movement: Celebrating Female Chefs

Across the hospitality industry, women continue to face barriers to progression and visibility in professional kitchens. The SHEF Movement, led by the HIT Chef Academy, part of HIT Training, is working to change that.

The SHEF Movement is an ongoing initiative designed to celebrate, amplify and support female chefs at every stage of their careers; from apprentices taking their first steps in the kitchen to experienced chefs leading teams. By sharing real stories and highlighting the achievements of women in hospitality, the movement aims to improve representation, encourage progression and support employers in building more inclusive kitchen cultures.

Despite progress across the industry, women remain underrepresented in chef roles, and many success stories go untold. The SHEF Movement exists to change that narrative. By raising visibility and creating a supportive community, the movement hopes to inspire future talent, encourage women already working in hospitality and help employers champion equality in their kitchens.

The initiative is built around three key pillars:

  • Empower – building confidence, championing progression and inspiring leadership among women in hospitality.

  • Enable – creating pathways into culinary careers through apprenticeships, training and mentorship.

  • Elevate – challenging the status quo and supporting more inclusive, forward-thinking kitchen cultures across the industry.

The movement invites female chefs, apprentices, employers, industry partners and anyone passionate about improving equality in hospitality to get involved. Organisations can support the campaign by sharing stories, promoting the movement and pledging to champion female talent within their teams.

Join the Conversation: The SHEF Movement Webinar

To mark the launch of the initiative, the SHEF Movement team is hosting a live industry webinar on Wednesday 25 March, 10:00–11:00 AM.

Hosted by Paul Mannering, National Hospitality & Culinary Lead, and Gemma Cadden, People Director, the session will bring together inspiring voices from across the sector to discuss:

  • Real journeys and experiences of female chefs

  • The realities of working in professional kitchens today

  • The gender gaps that still exist within the industry

  • Advice and insights for the next generation of chefs

The discussion aims to be positive, practical and forward-looking — encouraging chefs, employers and industry partners to work together to create a more inclusive future for hospitality.
