Inspiring Careers

Yasmin Haycock: Marketing Manager

Many school leavers have a clear vision of their dream career. But for me, the future was a mystery. Despite strong GCSE results, A Levels just weren’t my cup of tea. University didn’t hold the appeal, so after a year of sixth form, I took a leap and enrolled in a Hospitality Management Diploma at Gloucestershire College. The “why” behind that choice remains a blur, but present-day me is eternally grateful for that impulsive decision!

My diploma studies were perfectly paired with a waitressing role at Frankie & Benny’s in Gloucester. Back then, the brand was booming, and I thrived in that environment. Over several years, I built my confidence and climbed the ladder to Assistant Manager. By my early 20s, I was eager to explore different facets of hospitality. I embraced opportunities as an assistant manager at Liquid Nightclubs, a General Manager of a local gastropub, and a Restaurant Manager for a charming Greek restaurant on Gloucester Docks.

Motherhood brought a beautiful pause to my career journey between 2020 and 2023. While cherishing this time with my two daughters, I had a strong desire to return to work. However, many women in hospitality face a harsh reality: childcare limitations often clash with management roles. This led me to explore a new path: New Homes Sales Negotiator and marketing lead for a local estate agent. It was during this experience that marketing truly captured my heart, blossoming into a central focus of my role.

Determined to hone these newfound skills, I enrolled in an 8-week digital marketing course offered by my local college. That qualification ignited a spark within me, and at the “ripe old age” of 30, I made the bold decision to pursue a BA (Hons) Business Management degree with a specialization in Marketing through the Open University. Juggling motherhood, work, and studies was no easy feat, but the desire for a fulfilling career fuelled my determination.

With a thirst for practical experience, I set my sights on marketing jobs that would allow me to utilize my new skills and propel my career forward. Among the applications I submitted, a Recruitment Marketing Manager role at Stonegate Group stood out. This incredible opportunity offered a chance to return to the hospitality industry, but this time, through the dynamic lens of marketing! Additionally, the flexible schedule perfectly accommodated my childcare needs.

Since late February, I’ve been a proud member of the Publican Partners Recruitment Department at Stonegate. This journey, from waitressing to marketing manager, has been a thrilling surprise. The diverse hospitality roles I’ve held over the years have proven invaluable. My current role allows me to tap into that deep understanding and tailor marketing strategies that resonate with potential operators and publicans.

This is my story – a testament to the exciting twists and turns a career path in hospitality can take. You never know where your journey might lead, but with an open mind and a willingness to learn, you might just discover your true passion along the way.
