5 Signs You Need a Work-Life Balance Makeover

Working in hospitality is a bit like living on a rollercoaster. One minute you’re chatting with regulars and pouring the perfect pint, the next you’re running on two hours’ sleep and wondering when you last ate something that wasn’t chips off the pass. The buzz, the banter, the sense of teamwork on a busy Friday night, it’s addictive. But if you’re not careful, it can also swallow up your entire life.
Here are five signs you might need a bit of a work-life balance makeover.

1. You’ve Forgotten What a Weekend Off Feels Like

In hospitality, weekends are often the busiest time, so having one off feels like a rare treat. But if it’s been so long that you can’t remember what it’s like to make Friday plans or have a lazy Sunday morning, that’s a sign something’s out of balance. Everyone deserves a bit of downtime, even if it means swapping your days off to midweek. The world doesn’t stop on a Tuesday, and neither should your social life.

2. You’re Living on Coffee and Crisps

When you start relying on caffeine to stay upright and crisps to count as dinner, it’s time to reassess. When you’re on your feet all day, food often becomes an afterthought. But your body can’t run on energy drinks and leftover bar snacks forever. Even small changes, like bringing a packed lunch or sitting down for ten minutes to eat properly, can make a big difference.

3. Sleep? What’s That?

Late finishes, early starts, and the occasional lock-in with staff drinks can make proper rest feel impossible. But if you’re yawning through your shifts or snapping at customers for no reason, your body is trying to tell you it’s had enough. Getting into a routine, even a loose one, can help. Try winding down after work with something calming (and no, scrolling your phone in bed doesn’t count).

4. You’re Constantly Saying “Yes”

Covering shifts, helping out on your day off, staying late “just in case”, it’s easy to fall into the trap of always saying yes. You want to be a team player, and that’s great, but not at the cost of your sanity. Learning to set boundaries isn’t selfish; it’s smart. The pub will survive without you for one night. Promise.

5. You’ve Lost Sight of Life Outside the Bar

When your conversations, your friends, and even your dreams start revolving around the pub, it might be time to step back a bit. Your job might be a big part of who you are, but it’s not all you are. Pick up an old hobby, go for a proper walk, or plan a day out that doesn’t involve checking the rota. You’ll be amazed how refreshed you feel.

Working in hospitality takes stamina, heart, and a good sense of humour. But it also takes balance. If you recognise a few (or all) of these signs, don’t panic — it just means you need to top up your personal life the same way you top up a pint. Take care of yourself first, and you’ll not only be a better staff member, but you’ll actually enjoy the job a lot more.
After all, the best service starts with someone who’s not running on empty
