The weekly pub quiz can be the busiest night for some pubs, and it’s a great way to get your community involved in some good, competitive fun. If you’ve been put in charge of this week’s pub quiz, or you’re dipping your toe in for the first time, we have all the guidance you need to make your pub quiz the talk of the town!
Before we get into the nitty gritty, you first need to decide if the quiz night will be a weekly, or monthly thing. Letting your customer base know that quiz night will be every Thursday at 7pm leads to more regulars and no confusion for newcomers. Once the date has been set in stone, put it on blackboard chalk, print it, as well as updating website pages and socials too.
Pick the perfect host
The voice of your quiz will be keeping the energy of the night up, so make sure you’ve nominated someone who’s excited to host. It’s important that you speak slowly and clearly for each question, and ready to repeat them if needed. As long as the host keeps things funny and light-hearted, you’ll have the players enjoying themselves in no time.
Furniture Set-Up
Depending on your pub, you may be able to move your seating around to allow for bigger groups to sit around the host. If you are unable to move furniture, then make sure you pick the most suitable place, away from the heavy foot traffic to the bar and established place for the host to set up camp.
Who are your quiz attendees?
As a pub staff member, you know the people who walk through the door better than anyone else. Make sure that your questions fit the audience, as trivia knowledge can vary widely between demographics.
Here are some quiz rounds you could host for different generations:
- Students – If you’re pub is filled with a lot of university students, don’t be afraid to get more adventurous. If you have the space, split your quiz into two, your classic quiz questions, followed by some fun team games like flip cup, best crazy dance moves or quarters.
- Millennials – Host themed quiz nights like Disney night, Harry Potter trivia, Marvel night and more.
- Gen X – A music round full of all the classics would be perfect. Followed by a guess the show tunes round, would get the group thinking.
- Boomers – You can’t go wrong with your general knowledge questions. Think to include a “this week’s news” round, centred around headlines from the past week.
Remember to mix it up between each round, from music, to pictures or videos. If you keep the flow engaging from one round to the next, you’ll keep your competitors entertained.
