How to Do Well In Job Interviews

Landing an interview is the first step to success – here’s how to shine and make a lasting impression on your potential employer.

  • Research: Arm yourself with knowledge. Explore the pub’s background, market status, and competitors via their website and online presence. Take notes and consider bringing them to the interview.
  • Timeliness: Map out your route to the pub in advance, factoring in possible delays. Strive to arrive 10 minutes early.
  • Dress Code: Observe the pub’s attire standards beforehand and dress accordingly. Aim for smart, neat clothing, minimal jewellery, and subtle scents.
  • Video Interviews: Get comfortable with the technology and practice if necessary. Dress professionally and choose a distraction-free background.

  • Prepare Answers: Think through responses to typical questions, emphasising your strengths and how you’ve addressed any weaknesses.
  • Know Your CV: Be able to discuss your work history confidently without reading directly from your CV. Prepare to explain any employment gaps.
  • Body Language: Maintain good posture and eye contact, and manage your nervous habits. A warm, genuine smile can also go a long way.
  • Engage with Questions: Asking thoughtful questions can show genuine interest. Prepare a few to ask during your interview.
  • Stay Calm: Opt for a morning interview if you have the choice and use calming techniques to stay relaxed.
  • Follow-Up: Ask about the hiring timeline and send a thank-you note post-interview, reiterating your interest in the position.
  • By following these steps, you’ll demonstrate your professionalism and eagerness to join the pub team. Good luck!
