My career journey is not as squiggly as some, but I have learned and progressed a lot over the past five years; both in my job and as a person.
In March of 2019, I was 19 and had just returned from a year abroad teaching English in Honduras, and now that I was back home, I needed to find a job to save up money for university the following year. This was when I found my first role at Brewhouse & Kitchen as a front-of-house team member in Gloucester Quays. Through my time working there, I discovered that I really liked working in a busy environment and interacting with all the different people coming through the door each day. My favourite part was being a valued team member, as well as the relationships I made with my co-workers during such a short amount of time.
In 2020, I left my job to attend University to study environmental science, however with COVID starting in March 2020, sending us into lockdown and my course being impacted heavily with no practical learning, I decided to come back home. I returned to Brewhouse & Kitchen as a front-of-house team member again and after a few months of working there, got promoted to Supervisor. I think this was the moment it clicked for me that I could progress in the hospitality industry and it was where I wanted to focus my career efforts.
In 2022, I was promoted again to Assistant Manager, which I couldn’t have been happier about, however, I wanted to see if “the grass was greener on the other side”, and I left Brewhouse & Kitchen. I moved to a different restaurant, where I worked for four months leading up to the Christmas period in 2022, but I decided that it wasn’t for me – not every job or company in hospitality is the same!
I returned to Brewhouse & Kitchen in the New Year of 2023 as Assistant Manager again and I worked hard on progressing my training and career. In November of 2023, I took a big step in my career and accepted the General Manager position for the Christmas period of 2023. I can proudly say I’m now the official General Manager at our Brewpub in Gloucester Quays at the age of 24! Working at Brewhouse & Kitchen doesn’t feel like work, because our team are always having fun and we respect each other a great deal.
Through my journey at Brewhouse & Kitchen, I learnt that making mistakes is okay, as it is all a learning curve. The important part is to just say yes to things that feel scary sometimes and always ask for help.
My next goals now are to continue as a General Manager, become experienced and confident in my role so that I can help others to the best of my ability. I also want to guide and support those in my team to achieve their own career goals in the hospitality industry.
